Parts of Speech

Every word in a sentence has a specific role. There are eight roles, or functions, that a word might have. These are known as the eight parts of speech.

This matching game provides definitions for the eight parts of speech. These definitions are drawn from Reading and Writing for Success, by Archer, Costello and Harvey.

This part of speech names a person, place, thing, idea or quality
This part of speech takes the place of a noun.
This part of speech expresses an action or a state of being.
This part of speech describes a noun or pronoun.
This part of speech tells about a verb, an adjective or another adverb (hint, hint!!).
This word is always followed by a noun or pronoun. Working together, these words show how the noun or pronoun relates to another word in the sentence.A
This word joins parts of a sentence together. The parts can be words, phrases or clauses.
This is a word or phrase which expresses surprise or a strong emotion. Usually these words are short, and they often appear at or near the beginning of a sentence.
